The Cottontails is a dancing club in Bergen, Norway that dance American jazz dances from the first half of the 20th century, such as Lindy Hop, Balboa and Charleston.
Our main focus is social dancing, and really to just have fun when we dance!
This partner dance originated in dance clubs in the 20s and 30s in Harlem, New York, and is recognised as the original swing dance. It's energetic and creative, and at times high-flying. We dance to swung jazz, from Ella and Billie, The Duke, The Count and Prez. Perhaps even youngins' like Flip Phillips and Gerry Mulligan.
Authentic Jazz is a solo dance from the swing-era. We dance by ourselves or in groups, improvised or choreographed. We're talking about jazz steps like Susie Q, Fall Off the Log, Spank the Baby and Charleston. It's energetic, eccentric and ecstatic.
Balboa comes from the same period as Lindy Hop, and is danced to similar music. This dance came out of south California, where the dancefloor was so full that there wasn't space to swing your partner out. In Balboa, you dance in a tight closed position, with a focus on following and leading, and footwork. And you can dance the whole night to fast music without being exhausted! Slidable shoes are recommended, perhaps with a bit of heel for the ladies.
